The phenomenon of the ‘Korean wave’ has conquered the world in recent years: Netflix series, cosmetics, movies… And, of course, the K-pop idols, the fashionable musical style that competes from you to you with reggaeton, trap and the Latin genres that now dominate the industry.

Among the most prominent names in this genre is Blackpink. A South Korean girl band that has left an indelible mark on music, captivating millions of fans around the globe and achieving several achievements along the way.

Blackpink was formed in 2016 by YG Entertainment, one of the most influential entertainment agencies in South Korea, which chose Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa for this project.

A band that had a bid to climb to the top of the crest of the ‘Korean wave’: a cosmopolitan group. Because Jisoo is South Korean; Rosé, although she shares the same roots, is New Zealand and has lived in Australia, and Jennie is part of both worlds: she was born in South Korea, but grew up in New Zealand.

For her part, Lisa is Thai, and she is the K-pop idol with the most followers on Instagram (@lalalisa_m), reaching almost 100 million, and she has also succeeded solo.

Since their debut in 2016, with the single album Square One, which included the singles Boombayah and Whistle , the band has been making its way and becoming what for many is the female counterpart to BTS, the kings of K-pop. They have their ‘Army’, as their fans call themselves. While Blackpink’s followers are called ‘Blinks’.

Their discography is completed by Square Two (2016), Square Up (2018), Kill This Love, The Album (2020), Born Pink (2022), not counting the Japanese versions of their discography and their live albums. A career in which they have triumphed outside of South Korea and Asia, touring Europe, the United States and Latin America.

Of course, although they are stars, they have downplayed their image, claiming that they are “normal girls at the end of the day,” as Jennie expressed in a Time report: “We try very hard to look like superwomen.”

The other member about whom rivers of ink flow is Lisa, considered by many the most popular member not only of the band but of Korean pop in general. She, like Blackpink, has managed to make history, but, in this case, alone: her song De ella Money de ella has become the most listened to female K-pop song on Spotify.

Rumors on Weibo, fueled by a publication in the Munhwa Ilbo media , suggest that Lisa could leave the group, although YG has reported that the renewal of Lisa’s contract is currently in negotiations. In addition, there are photographs of the young Thai woman with Frédéric Arnault, the son of one of the richest men in Europe, which has sparked rumors about a possible love relationship between the two.

But, beyond all these theories about the stories of the hearts of the members of the South Korean band and their continuity in Blackpink, the truth is that they continue to be the queens of female K-pop, and the band still has a ‘Korean wave’ left. ‘ for a while.
