At the end of February, there was good news for
Rihanna
and her fans when she received the
Humanitarian
Award from Harvard University, in honor of her great contributions to charity activities. promote education. It can be said that she is proud to be the first female singer to receive this honorary award.
This award honors Rihanna’s charitable activities and the Clara and Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program. The program, named after her grandparents, is an effort to improve education and help students in Caribbean countries attend college in the United States. She also supports the Global Citizen Project and the global education partner – Global Partnership for Education & Global Citizen Project.
At the awards ceremony, the image of a fiery Riri on stage was replaced by a mature girl and her speeches truly inspired everyone. Below is Rihanna’s entire speech at Harvard University:
“
Finally, I went to Harvard University. I never thought in my life that I would be here saying this, and it feels so good. Thank you Professor Counter, thank you Harvard Foundation, and finally, thank you to Harvard University for giving me this honor. Thank you everyone for recognizing my contributions even though I have never done it to seek this recognition
, “Rihanna said to the applause of everyone present at that time.
“When I was only about 5 or 6 years old, once watching television, I remember seeing images of disadvantaged children in many parts of the world, and you know, those advertisements often accompanied by the information ‘With just your 25 cents, we can save a child’, remember? And then, I asked myself, how many times that 25 cents would it take to save all the children in Africa? I promised myself: When I grow up, when I’m rich, I will help all the children in this world. And really until now, I don’t know why I thought like that and what to do to achieve that when I was just a child (laugh).
At the age of 17, I started working in the US. Within a year, I participated in establishing the first charity organization in my life. I connected with other organizations in the years that followed for opportunities to meet and help, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, as in the case of 6-year-old Jasmina Anema, who passed away. in 2010 in leukemia, her story inspired more than a thousand people to volunteer through DKMS. In 2012, when my grandmother, Clara Brathwaite, lost her long battle with cancer, this was the strongest reason why I founded the Clara Lionel Foundation. We are all human. And more than anyone else, we all have the same opportunities: opportunities in life, opportunities for education, opportunities in the future, right? And with CLF, our mission is to influence and help as many people as possible. But we just start with each person, one person at a time.
When I looked into this beautiful room, I saw optimism, I saw hope, I saw the future. I know that every individual here, and everyone, has an opportunity to help others. All you need is to help someone without expecting anything in return. I think that’s the human heart.
Everyone thought it was a difficult and big job. The truth is, and I also want the kids who see that ad to know, that you don’t have to be rich to have humanity. You don’t need to be rich to help others. You don’t have to be famous either. And you don’t even need to get a college education. That’s what I mean and I always want it that way.
It can start with your neighbor, or whoever is next to you, the person you sit next to in class or the kids in the neighborhood, you can help in any way you can. And today, I want to challenge everyone here to commit to helping an individual through an organization or a cause that really touches you. My grandmother always told me that if you only had $1, you would have shared a lot. Thank you everyone, this is my honor.”
Rihanna
‘s cute gestures and speeches made many people love her. Students present at the event said they were inspired to help poor children. And Rihanna has succeeded in building the image of a female singer who not only devotes herself to art but also brings humane values to the community.
