Marcy Merritt was out walking her dogs through a quiet area of a park with no one else around, when suddenly she spotted a stray dog.
“I noticed her following in the distance,” Merritt told The Dodo. “I was nervous at first, unsure of what to do.”

Merritt’s nerves quickly melted away, though, as soon as the dog caught up with them and made herself right at home in the pack.
“The second I pet her, she got crazy zoomies and then didn’t leave our side the rest of the way,” Merritt said.

In addition to her own animals, two dogs and two cats, Merritt already had three foster dogs at home, and had a sneaking suspicion that she was about to collect a fourth. The dog happily continued along the family’s walk with them, and Merritt couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. She hadn’t been looking for another foster dog, but somehow they always find her.
It’s impossible to know exactly how long the dog had been wandering through the park and if she’d passed any other families along the way, but she seemed to know that this was the perfect one for her to join.
As they neared the end of their walk, the stray dog raced ahead of her new family, as if she knew exactly where the car was and that she was definitely getting in it. Once they all reached the car together, there was no convincing necessary. The dog hopped right in alongside her new foster siblings, and from the look on her face, it was clear that she couldn’t be happier about it.
“She acted like she was my dog,” Merritt said. “She was so comfortable and happy.”

The family headed home and the new dog settled in immediately. She was clearly so excited to be in a place where she would be loved and cared for. After getting her scanned for a microchip, they learned that her name was Venus, but unfortunately her family never came forward to collect her. Instead, Merritt went through the proper steps to officially foster her, and Venus is pretty happy about it.

“She has multiple applications from families to adopt her,” Merritt said. “I will be her foster family until she is adopted by her forever family.”
When Merritt headed out on her walk that day, she had no idea that she would be coming home with another foster dog — but after meeting Venus, she wouldn’t have it any other way.
