This 12-year-old dog doesn’t have much time left, but she’s living out her final days to the fullest, thanks to the kindness of one shelter volunteer and his wife.

Marcie arrived at the Kenton County Shelter in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, over a month ago. She was picked up off the streets, deaf and blind, her fur riddled with fleas. She wandered alone like this for two weeks before she was brought to the shelter by animal control.

Upon arriving at the shelter, it was discovered that Marcie had terminal cancer as well.

“When they brought this poor one in, I just loved her,” Bill Baker told Cincinnati.com. “We thought we’d give her some comfort in her last days. Turns out, she’s done so much for us – reminded us what it is to be human. She’s a joy.”

The Bakers have had Marcie for five weeks now and have made certain she receives all the affection, appreciation and comfort she deserves. She wears a cast on her leg to cover up an open sore, but she’s being tenderly cared for by her new parents.

Furthermore, the Bakers have gone on to honor and immortalize Marcie with a series of photos from a special, heartwarming shoot by Lisa Binns of Shelter Dog Photography.

“This is the most beautiful and special adoption – the fact that they were willing to take her on and tend to her needs and give her a great life for what time she has left,” Elizabeth Cochran, director of the Kenton County shelter, told Cincinnati.com. “It’s an adoption that rarely happens.”It’s the type of special adoption that profoundly changes lives. Marcie is still alive and it is unknown how many days, weeks or months she has left, but at the very least, she is happy.
